F-1, Student
An F1 visa may be obtained for a student who wishes to pursue full-time academic studies in a college, university, seminar, conservatory, private academic high school, other academic institution, or language-training program.
In order to qualify for F-1 status, the alien must first apply to, and be accepted by, an academic institution in the United States authorized to enroll foreign students. The student must establish that he or she has the financial ability to pay for all costs associated with the education. He or she must be proficient in English or receive training to make him or her proficient and intend to depart the United States upon completion of his or her studies.
All students are given permission to be in the United States for “duration of status,” that is for the period of time needed to complete the educational program plus 60 days. Additionally, upon initial admission, the student must intend to attend the school specified on the F-1 Visa.
